Exercise 2: Read planets in aspect to other planets.
In this exercise, only the personal planets and the ascendant are used. They form the core of the nature - the personality, the mind and the emotions. The other planets, when they aspect the personal planets; impress their nature upon that part of the personality. In (1) are the symbols for the first planct and its sign and keywords for both. In (2), are the aspects and keywords for the aspect, or in other cases, connecting words. In (3), are the symbols and keywords for the second planct and its sign.

- 1. Sun in Cancer square Jupiter in Aries. The personality is defensive and emotional, in contrast with another side of the nature that is bold and wants to grow and expand. These sides fight each other.
- 2. Moon in Leo trine Uranus in Sagittarius. The emotions are dramatic, there is an emotional need to be independent and free.
- 3. Ascendant in Capricorn opposing the Sun in Cancer. Life is approached with discipline and reserve and this conflicts with the sensitive personality.
- 4. Mercury in Aquarius conjunct Neptune in Aquarius. The person is a thinker, an intellectual and is also intuitive. Mercury square Pluto in Taurus. But there is also intense stubbornness, rigidity.
- 5. Venus in Virgo trine Saturn in Taurus. In romantic matters, there is an element of caution and a tendency to over-analyse. Venus semi-square Moon in Leo. This is incompatible with the dramatic and warm emotions. This contrasting mix of feelings indicates there will be conflict in relationships.
- (Note how in this statement, an opinion has been made “there will be conflict in relationships.” It is well understood in psychology, that inner conflict translates into outer conflict. Adding extra information like this is part of the psychological astrology craft).
- 6. Mars in Scorpio sextile ascendant in Capricorn. However, the desires are intense and compatible with a stable and cautious approach to life.
Notice how the keywords are joined together with conjunctions to make the various statements understandable and so that they flow. Adverb conjunctions like “however”, “yer” or but“ are very useful when knitting together the hard aspects or contrasting parts of the personality.
